55 minutes across the Rhine

Strasbourg Christmas Market

Over 300 chalets across the whole old town, the great tree on Place Kléber and the cathedral above it.

The Christkindelsmärik is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe – and unlike most, it is not one market but a good dozen. They are spread across the whole Grande Île, and the best part is that walking between them takes you through an old town that is UNESCO World Heritage anyway.

The great tree stands on Place Kléber. Around the cathedral the chalets crowd in so closely that you almost forget to look up – don't. And in the Petite France, behind the water channels, it goes quiet again.

Where to find what

Place Broglie is the historic Christkindelsmärik itself. Place Kléber has the tree and the Village du Partage. Around the cathedral and Place du Château it gets busiest. The Marché aux Poissons and the Terrasse Rohan are about food, Square Louise Weiss about Alsatian producers – and Place Benjamin Zix in the Petite France is, for many, the loveliest corner.

Our tip

Go on a weekday and leave early. In the morning, as the chalets open, you have the lanes almost to yourself; from late afternoon at weekends it becomes very crowded.

Bring your ID. And do not plan the return too tightly – the Rhine bridges are slow on December evenings.

A big day – and a quiet valley afterwards

Strasbourg takes something out of you. It is good not to end the evening in a city but somewhere dark and still.
