Chrysanthema Lahr
Two weeks of colour before winter sets in: from 24 October to 8 November the old town of Lahr turns into a garden.
There is a moment in late October when the leaves are down, the days are short and nobody is looking forward to November. That is exactly when the town of Lahr fills its old centre with chrysanthemums.
Not a few planters. The whole town: carpets of blossom across the squares, arrangements in the lanes, floral installations between the houses, for two weeks. The theme for 2026 is „Farbenfrohe Glücksmomente“ – colourful moments of happiness – and for once that is not an overstatement.
What to expect
Chrysanthema is not a fenced-off site with a ticket booth. It is the town itself. You wander, stop, have a coffee, wander on. In between there are photo points, a music programme and guided tours – on Sundays and public holidays also in sign language.
A special exhibition joins the programme in 2026: „Florale Skulpturen aus Holz“, chainsaw-carved wooden sculptures by Jean-Luc Ringwald, at the town museum.

Go on a weekday. Lahr is busy at weekends, and the flowers are easier to enjoy when you are not being jostled. The last hour before dusk is the loveliest, when the lighting comes on and the colours shift again.
And take the road back via Seelbach rather than the main road. The route through the Schutter valley adds ten minutes and is worth every one of them.
Stay two nights
One day in Lahr, one day in the valley – and in the evening Baden cuisine you do not have to drive to. Our restaurant made the OpenTable list of Germany's 50 best in 2025; you reach it from your room by walking down the stairs.
